Location

By choosing Thassos as your holiday destination you get the benefits of a beautiful Greek island without a lengthy and expensive ferry boat journey.

Thassos is served by the two, nearby mainland ports of Kavala and Keramoti. The city of Kavala and the port of Keramoti are both easy to reach from the Ignatia Odos (European highway E90) which is the main motorway serving the whole of the north of Greece, from Igoumenitsa on the west coast to Alexandroupolis in the east, close to the Turkish border. The E90 provides road connections to all of the Balkans and to the south of Greece and also passes Thessaloniki, Greece’s second city.

The Kavala route to Thassos takes about one hour and 15 minutes and arrives at Skala Prinos. This route has a maximum of 5 sailings to the island during the summer months. From Skala Prinos to Apartments Esperides is 27.5 km’s. From Skala Prinos you will take the ring road and travel in a clockwise direction (following signs for Limenas), bypass Limenas and go through Panagia, after another 2.5 km’s you will reach Potamia - carry on for another 3 kilometres and then turn left (sign posted Skala Potamia), take the first left again and after 1 km you will see Apartments Esperides on your right hand side (there is a slightly shorter route but it is not so clearly marked)

The fastest and shortest ferry route to Thassos is from Keramoti and is the most popular during the summer months as there are departures every half an hour during the summer and the journey time is only 35 minutes. The boat docks in Limenas (Thassos Town) which is only a 13 kilometre journey to Apartments Esperides. Follow the signs from the ferry port for Panagia/Potamia/Skala Potamia, from Potamia follow the directions above. We will be waiting to greet you!

Travelling to Thassos by Aeroplane

Thassos does not have its own airport but is well serviced by Kavala Airport (Megas Alexandros - KVA) during the summer months. There is a flight 2 times a day from Athens all year round. Kavala Airport is a 17 kilometre taxi/car trip to Keramoti port. Car hire is easily arranged from the airport with many international and some Thassian car hire companies providing services from there.

Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) is an international airport and has flights to and from most European destinations. From the airport you can either take a bus or taxi to the coach station and from there it is a pleasant 2 hour journey to Kavala. The coaches run throughout the day on the hour. If you choose, you can hire a car from the airport and drive to either Kavala or Keramoti, the journey should take you no more than 2 hours.

Thassos Island is the most northerly of all the Greek Islands and can be found in the Aegean Sea nestled between the Halkidiki Peninsular and Kavala. Uniquely it is only 6 kilometres away from the nearest point of the mainland. Along with its stunning natural beauty this is one of the reasons for Thassos’s popularity. No lengthy ferry boat journeys, in fact you can reach Thassos in 35 minutes from the mainland port of Keramoti!

Thassos is almost circular and has a rugged beauty, with the Ipsarion Mountain range dominating the interior of the island. The mountains are covered in rich and dense forests, mainly pine but also plane and oak are dominant, there is even an ancient cedar forest. You will find mountain streams which cascade over waterfalls until ultimately reaching the sea and the wonderful beaches.

Thassos has a good road network and apart from mountain tracks is asphalt paved. The main road runs around the whole island (approximately 100 km’s) and has arterial roads which provide access up to the traditional mountain villages.

Go a little way inland and you will come to the traditional villages of Potamia and Panagia, 3 and 5 kilometres respectively. Both of these villages are tucked away in the foothills of the Ipsarion mountain range which loom impressively over the villages. Wander the twisting, narrow streets, crisscrossing small mountain streams all shaded by giant Plane trees and discover a time long forgotten. Cafes and taverns will tempt you with their traditional Thassian treats.

Potamia is also the birthplace of the internationally renowned sculptor Polygnotos Vagis, you will find a small museum close to the church which is a ‘must visit’ for art lovers. These two villages also make an excellent base if you enjoy trekking and hiking, if you’re feeling energetic there are trails which take you to the top of the island, Mount Ipsarion at a towering 1209 metres above sea level. From here you will be rewarded with views all the way to Turkey, including Samothraki and Limnos Islands.

In the village of Skala Potamia you can find everything you may need, from bars, cafes and restaurants, gift shops and supermarkets.
